The Batman (2022) Is Better Than Dark Knight

I know. BLASPHEMY.

But hear me out.

Matt Reeves' The Batman is the BEST portrayal of the character ever put to screen. Not the best MOVIE — the best BATMAN.

There's a difference.

Pattinson's Batman is WOUNDED. Not angry (that's Affleck). Not campy (Clooney, looking at you). Not even righteous (Bale). He's BROKEN.

He doesn't fight crime because it's right. He fights because he CAN'T STOP. The opening monologue: "They think I'm hiding in the shadows. But I AM the shadows."

That's not a hero. That's an OBSESSION. A compulsion. He's addicted to vengeance.

And for the first time, we see Batman DETECTIVE work. The Riddler's puzzles. The trail of clues. The investigation. This is the WORLD'S GREATEST DETECTIVE, not just a guy in a suit who punches people.

And Gotham? FINALLY a Gotham that feels REAL. Rain-soaked. Corrupt. GOTHIC. Not a Chicago stand-in with some matte paintings. This city has PERSONALITY. You can SMELL it through the screen.

The Riddler as a FURY of the forgotten? The social media angle? The "I'm vengeance" becoming "I'm trying to be"?

THAT'S character growth. He learns that fear and violence aren't enough. Gotham needs HOPE, not just vengeance.

Let's talk about the Batmobile scene. The car CHARGES UP. The engine ROARS. It's not a tank (Nolan) or a military vehicle (Snyder). It's a MUSCLE CAR. A monster. And when it fires up and chases the Penguin through the streets... I felt it in my CHEST.

Practical. Gritty. Real. You felt every CRUNCH of metal.

Nirvana's "Something in the Way" as the theme? Perfect. The score is HAUNTING. That single piano note. The Batman theme. Simple. Effective. ICONIC.

Look, Dark Knight is a better CRIME DRAMA. Better script. Better villain. Better story.

But The Batman is a better BATMAN MOVIE. It understands the character on a DEEPER level. It's about who Batman IS, not just what he does.
